TheSanta Maria della Croce Church (Casaranello) Church of St Domenico dates probably to the 1536. It has a Latin cross plan, some finely decorated altars and a painting representing the Virgin. The Church and the Convent of St Mary of the Angels were built in the 16th century and the soil was given by the lord of the time, Gurello Filomarini. Some old fortified farms can still be seen outside the urban area.

The people of Casarano have three nicknames: “sacare” (snakes), “machi” (foolish people) and St. John Elemosiniere Steeple“zocculari”(cunning people). The first nickname was created by the people of Melissano. The second and the third nicknames are one opposite to the other, because the first refers to people who do not react to insults, while the other means they are shrewd and clever.
